Workshop Description
This workshop will be three days of personal and professional growth through exploration of sand, play and art. Participants will use simple art materials and sand tray play therapy to enter the nonverbal realm of image-making and creative expression to learn how to be more effective with clients around issues of trauma, grief and loss. No previous knowledge or artistic skills are required.
Workshop Goals
The workshop will help participants to:
- Learn how the integrative power of sandplay and art-making processes is particularly useful for healing trauma and grief.
- Experience a variety of art making exercises that are applicable to play therapy practice with both children and adults.
- Learn how these nonverbal modalities encourage clients to stay in their right hemispheres when they need to process feelings or integrate the implicit aspects of memories.
- Increase sand tray play therapy skills through witnessing and creating personal sandtrays.
- Develop art, sand and play therapy skills that utilize creative processes to address trauma and grief.
Presenters:
Donna Hanna-Chase, MA, ATR-BC, MFCC, LMFT, LPAT is a registered art therapist and a licensed psychotherapist from Laguna Woods , California . Donna is a former adjunct faculty member of the University of New Mexico , School of Art Education in Albuquerque , New Mexico . She also served as an art therapy supervisor and was a faculty member at Webster University in Albuquerque . In California , Donna currently teaches art at Irvine Valley College , and she is a psychotherapist at the Pain Management Clinic in Laguna Hills . Donna has extensive experience as a psychotherapist with play therapy, marriage and family therapy and individual therapy with both children and adults across a wide range of clinical populations.
Theresa Kestly, PhD, RPT-S is a psychologist, educator, consultant and a registered play therapist/supervisor with the Association for Play Therapy. She is an international presenter, and she maintains a private practice with specialties in play therapy and sand tray therapy in Corrales, New Mexico for children, adults, families, couples, and small groups. Theresa served as a senior staff psychologist at the Albuquerque Family and Child Guidance Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she specialized in child, adolescent and family therapy, consultations with the Indian Health Service, and consultations with the Albuquerque Public Schools. She supervised psychology, counseling and psychiatry trainees as an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Mexico. Theresa served as the first president of the New Mexico Association for Play Therapy. She is the founder and director of the Sand Tray Training Institute of New Mexico in Corrales, New Mexico where she provides large-group seminars and small-group intensive training for psychotherapists in child and adult sand tray therapy.

Fees:
$375 early fee (postmarked 30 days in advance)
$405 regular fee
$345 early fee for students (postmarked 30 days in advance) - send proof of full-time student status.
Refunds: Registration fees are refundable (less $50.00 administrative fee) if written notice is post-marked no later than 30 days before the group begins. Refunds require a minimum 6-week processing time. Registrants may transfer/sell their enrollment to another qualified person at any time.
